“He’s…going?” David repeated the words, his voice a low monotone. His advisor, Professor Lee, was leaving. The implications were vast, complex, terrifying. His palms were slick with sweat.

He spent the rest of the day in a stupor, walking through campus aimlessly. He barely registered the passing students, the familiar landmarks. Everything felt distant, like an imperfect copy of the real thing.

He couldn't bring himself to open his thesis. The blank page, once a challenge, now represented a monumental task.
