The fluorescent lights of the office seemed to hum a song of endless, wearying monotony. Sarah stared at her computer screen, the words blurring, unable to focus on the marketing report. Her stomach churned with a familiar, heavy ache, a physical manifestation of the dread that had been clinging to her like a shroud for weeks.

She hadn't slept properly in days, tossing and turning, the silence of her apartment amplifying the hollow feeling inside. This promotion, this VP position, it was all she had worked for. Now, seeing Mark's name whispered in the halls, her ambition felt like a cruel joke.

She reached for her coffee cup, the ceramic cold against her trembling fingers. The lukewarm liquid did nothing to soothe the tightness in her chest. She just wanted to disappear, to vanish into the beige wallpaper and the echoing silence of her own mind.
