He walked the familiar route to work, the sunshine feeling like a cruel joke. He had found it hard to get out of bed, each morning. The thought of facing the day, of the constant reminders of his perceived failure, made him want to stay curled up in the dark.

He tried to focus on his work, but his mind wandered. His energy was gone. He felt distant, as if observing his own life from afar. The promotion, the career ladder – all felt meaningless.

He slumped in his chair, staring out the window, watching the leaves fall. The world felt gray, the colours of his life leached away. He was empty, a shell.
