The notice lay on the floor, crumpled beneath her foot. Olivia didn’t bother to pick it up. She had been staring out the window for hours, the city skyline a blurred, indifferent backdrop to her despair.

She felt a hollowness inside, a vast, empty space where hope used to reside. She hadn’t slept well in weeks. She had stopped eating. She felt like a puppet with its strings cut.

Her apartment, once her sanctuary, now felt like a cage. She just wanted to escape, to be free from the oppressive weight that had settled upon her. The thought of everything that had to be done filled her with dread. The future, previously exciting, was now an abyss.
