Gemotions

The sunlight was too bright, making Emily squint as she rummaged through the clutter in the garage. Her shoulders ached, and the world seemed to tilt at an unsettling angle. She’d been avoiding this task, her grandfather's belongings. It felt like a betrayal to her own inaction, to have to put away everything that defined him.

She unearthed a box labeled "Miscellaneous." Inside, amongst rusty tools and forgotten trinkets, was a letter. A draft. Her grandfather’s resignation letter from his beloved teaching position. It was almost illegible, the ink faded, but the words still conveyed a sense of resignation. “...the joy in the craft now diminished…,” she read, her throat tightening.

She closed her eyes, imagining him, the man who had always seemed so strong, so vibrant, now reduced to this. A hollow ache bloomed in her chest, mirroring the loss she was experiencing.
