The house was too loud, filled with the ghosts of the past. Sarah felt a profound disconnect from everything around her. She found it hard to get out of bed, each day seeming like a monumental task. She was tasked with going through her parent’s old things, a reminder of the emptiness in her life.

She found the letter tucked away in a box of old photographs. A draft. Her mother’s resignation letter from the publishing house. The words, so neatly typed, betrayed a hidden anguish. “…feeling unable to fulfil the requirements…”, it stated.

Sarah felt a sudden chill, a sense of familiarity with these words. She understood, in a visceral way, the struggles her mother had faced. She felt the heavy weight of the world settle upon her shoulders, a burden she felt unable to bear. She had a sudden, overwhelming urge to weep.
