The digital clock on the bedside table glared at Daniel, reminding him of the relentless passage of time. He lay in bed, the sheets tangled around his legs. The unopened letter, lying on the dresser, was a constant source of discomfort. It had arrived a week ago, a communication from the ex-girlfriend who’d cruelly broken his heart.

He couldn’t bring himself to open it. The thought of reading her words, of reliving the pain, was more than he could bear. The world seemed to be closing in on him. His chest felt constricted. His breathing was shallow. He closed his eyes, and the darkness only deepened his sense of isolation.

He finally reached for the letter, his hand shaking. He ripped it open. The apology was short, and filled with a regret he couldn't comprehend. He fell back on the bed, all feeling completely drained.
