The vibrant colours of the house – once a source of comfort – seemed to mock her. The red of the kitchen now reminded her of the blood found on the floor. Emily had been in an elated mood, the new place was a fresh start. She'd found it. Her neighbor, a chatty older woman, had casually mentioned the house's history.

The air felt thick, difficult to breathe. Each room felt smaller, the walls closing in. The thought of cooking, of eating, of even moving, was too much.
