The house seemed to hum with a discordant energy. Sarah felt as though she were operating underwater, her movements slow and thick. The secret account felt like a physical weight, pressing down on her chest. Her husband's explanation, a long-winded tale about financial security, was like a foreign language.

She stared out at the garden, the vibrant colors of the flowers a mockery of the grayness she felt inside. She didn't want to engage, didn't want to argue, didn't want to feel. The thought of confronting him was exhausting.

The curtains remained drawn, blocking out the light, creating a sense of perpetual twilight. She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to ward off the chill that seemed to emanate from within. She felt utterly alone.
