Gemotions

The dust motes danced in the single ray of sunlight slicing through the attic's gloom. Amelia hadn't been up here since her mother's passing, the air thick with the scent of mothballs and forgotten memories. Now, sifting through boxes labeled with her mother's neat script, she stumbled upon a small, leather-bound notebook. It was tucked away in a trunk labeled "Treasures."

Her fingers trembled as she opened it. The first page was a title: "Things to Do Before I… Well, You Know." A strange, aching feeling settled in her chest. She skimmed the list, her eyes widening at each entry. "Learn to Tango," "See the Northern Lights," "Write a Novel." A hollow laugh escaped her lips. Her mother, so practical, so grounded, had these secret aspirations.

Amelia found herself staring out the attic window at the grey sky, mirroring the emptiness she felt inside. She slammed the notebook shut, feeling a coldness wash over her. It felt as though her mother's dreams had been stolen.
