The hum of the refrigerator, the only constant sound in Liam’s otherwise silent apartment, was starting to grate on his nerves. He'd lost interest in everything. The days stretched out before him, identical and pointless.

He saw Mrs. Petrov, his quiet, elderly neighbour, pull up in a brand-new, luxury sedan. He watched her get out, effortlessly, as if carrying no burdens, her smile bright. He knew she had lived modestly for years. It left him cold.

Liam turned away from the window, and sat on the floor, the cold tiles a welcome contrast to the heat in his cheeks.
