Gemotions

The doorbell chimed, a sound Amelia usually found cheerful. Now, it felt like an intrusion. She shuffled to the door in her oversized sweater, the sleeves dragging on the floor. A delivery man stood holding a bouquet of vibrant sunflowers, their faces turned upward, seemingly mocking her gloom. There was no card. Just the flowers, radiating a joy she couldn't fathom.

She took them inside, the scent a heavy, unwelcome sweetness in the stale air of her apartment. They sat on the kitchen table, a splash of yellow against the chipped countertop and unwashed dishes. Amelia poured herself a cup of cold coffee, staring at the blooms. Who would send flowers anonymously? Someone who pitied her?

The silence of the afternoon was deafening, the cheerful faces of the sunflowers accusing. She found herself pulling the petals off one by one, scattering them on the table like discarded thoughts.
