“Oh, for heaven’s sake,” she muttered, peering through the peephole. A small vase of freesias, their delicate scent already filling the hallway. No card. Just the flowers. Sarah considered leaving them on the landing, pretending they weren't for her.

She'd been avoiding everyone. The phone calls, the emails, the world in general. The world felt too bright, too loud, too demanding. The flowers, though pretty, felt like an interrogation.

She brought them inside, placing them on the mantlepiece. The yellows and creams seemed to mock her. She wished she could just disappear.
