He was trapped. The thought echoed in his mind, a constant, low-grade hum. The world outside the window was vibrant, demanding, and utterly inaccessible. A hesitant knock at the door, a polite inquiry, a request for a small piece of his land. It was Mrs. Miller, holding a packet of sunflower seeds.

“Hello! I was wondering if you'd allow me to plant some flowers along the fence. Just to brighten things up a bit, you know?” Her smile was kind, but it felt like a spotlight on his own internal gloom. He felt a deep, profound resistance.

He focused on the scuff marks on the door, letting the silence lengthen. The request was a trivial thing. But it felt like a tidal wave. He shook his head, a slow, almost imperceptible movement. Mrs. Miller's smile faded, and she turned and walked away. He remained, alone in the deepening shadows.
