He slammed his fist on the table, making the glasses jump. His daughter, Sophia, had just told him she was becoming a Wiccan. The fury coursing through him threatened to consume him. He struggled to regulate his breathing, chest heaving. The dining room, where they had celebrated countless holidays, now felt alien and hostile. He rose abruptly, unable to face the calm expression on Sophia’s face. He fled the room, the sound of her calm voice still echoing in his ears, and slammed the front door behind him.
