The rhythmic whine of the saw ripped through the afternoon, a mechanical scream that echoed in Leo's skull. He gripped the steering wheel, knuckles white, staring at the mail on the passenger seat. Another eviction notice. His apartment was so quiet he could have heard a single ant moving, and that was the problem, the quiet.

He hadn’t showered in two days. The grime clung to him, a visible manifestation of his mounting anxieties. Across the street, the cheerful chaos of the renovation continued, mocking his circumstances. He imagined the neighbour, oblivious, and felt a surge of resentment.

He switched the engine off, the sudden silence almost unbearable. He needed to get his stuff together, pack it up, and figure out somewhere to go.
