The neighbor's house was transformed into a monster. Every morning, the noise started before dawn and continued until dusk, a barrage of sound that made Jane’s teeth ache. She would stare at the house, her stomach twisting.

She stared at the wall, willing the noise to stop. Her last paycheck was gone and the food was running low. She'd sold everything of value she could.

She wanted to run, to escape, but there was nowhere to go. She closed her eyes, trying to block out the relentless noise, and the even more frightening silence.
