"Please, just... please," Elias whispered, clutching his chest. His heart felt like a trapped bird, fluttering frantically. The renovations, the incessant clamor, had become a physical manifestation of his fears.

The job interview was tomorrow. He needed to be sharp, focused, prepared. The constant din made it impossible to concentrate.

He walked outside, unable to breath. He sat on the porch steps, head in his hands, as the sounds of construction surrounded him, a deafening chorus of impending doom.
