She was surprised she hadn’t crumbled. She took a step, another, and then found herself inside. The stale air hung heavy, a mixture of forgotten scents and past losses. She spotted the ring – her mother's, the one she’d always coveted, the one she’d sworn she’d never let go. Now, it was her only hope.

She pointed, her finger trembling. "That one," she said, her voice thin and reedy. The shop owner, a man with a perpetually cynical expression, gave a cursory glance and named a price. It was barely enough, but it was all she had.
