“And you see here,” she said, her voice thin and high-pitched, pointing to the screen, “this is where you upload the data.” Across from her, Michael, the new trainee, nodded, his eyes bright with interest. She found herself clutching the edge of the desk, her knuckles white, her pulse racing.

She went through the motions, guiding him, explaining the system. Her brain felt muddled, the words tripping over each other. She knew she had to show him everything, to provide him with an appropriate introduction to the job.

She was so worried. She felt a constant, sickening dread. The thought of what would happen after she left this office, after she no longer had a job, made her want to run, to scream, to disappear.
