The weight of the cello pressed against Elias's ribs, the vibrations of the instrument a physical manifestation of his turmoil. The conductor’s announcement still rang in his ears. Violin to cello. Elias had worked relentlessly to master the violin, poured his heart into its melodic flow. Now, a different instrument, a different sound. He stared at the cello, its dark wood a mocking mirror of his fear. The other musicians were already tuning, their instruments singing in a chorus of practiced perfection. He wanted to run, to hide, to disappear. He took a deep breath, and began to tune, his movements tentative, his heart heavy.
