He checked the time, again, a meaningless ritual that brought him no comfort. The flight delay. His father's bedside. *He* needed to be there. His hands trembled as he tried to dial his sister's number, but his fingers fumbled on the screen. The phone slipped from his grasp and clattered to the floor.

He sunk to his knees, his shoulders slumped. The sterile floor tiles seemed to mock him. Each second that passed, was another he couldn't get back. The silence in his ears was deafening, the echoes of his own racing heartbeat filling the void.
