The flyer felt slick beneath Elias's trembling fingers. "Retirement Reception - Dr. Eleanor Vance." A knot tightened in his stomach. He'd been counting on Eleanor, on her guidance, her unflappable calm. He’d gone to her office earlier today, ready to present the initial data for his thesis. The door was locked. Now, this. He crumpled the paper, the edges biting into his palm. He needed her. Without her, he was adrift. He threw the flyer into the overflowing trash can and ran a hand through his hair, tugging so hard he almost ripped it out.
