The flickering fluorescent lights of the bus station seemed to amplify the hum in Amelia's ears. She rubbed her temples, the cheap synthetic fabric of her dress already starting to itch. Across from her, Mark, a fellow applicant for the junior marketing position at Sterling Corp, fiddled with a crumpled lottery ticket. He hadn't seen her in days. She’d been avoiding him. This interview was all she had.

Her stomach churned. Each passing minute felt like an eternity. She needed this job. Needed it like she needed air. The bills were piling up, the landlord’s notices getting more insistent. Failure wasn't an option.

The automatic doors hissed open. A gust of wind and the smell of exhaust wafted in. Amelia closed her eyes, took a shaky breath, and repeated the interview questions in her head. "Tell me about your strengths... your weaknesses..."
