The biting wind whipped at her face as she stood on the cliff edge. Below, the churning sea roared, a constant, hungry presence. "Mark, you know what we saw. The black car. The plates…" Her voice was almost swallowed by the gale.

Mark, beside her, shielded his eyes, looking out at the waves. “Sarah, there was no car. We walked, remember? We were talking about the trip to the coast." He was so calm.

A cold dread seeped into her bones, stealing her breath. She had placed all her hope there. Her stomach twisted, and she felt like she might fall over the edge.
