The rejection letter felt like a physical blow. Amelia crumpled it in her hand, the paper crackling like a dying fire. Another one. She sank onto the floral-patterned sofa, the familiar scent of her mother's rose-petal potpourri suddenly cloying. Her phone buzzed; another application she'd meticulously crafted, rejected. A sob escaped her, and she ran a hand through her already disheveled hair. A forgotten box in the attic. The attic. Maybe there was something, anything, in that musty space that could offer a solution.

She clawed her way through cobwebs and dust motes, the air thick with the ghosts of forgotten summers. A cardboard box, labeled in her mother's neat cursive: “Amelia's School Days.” Inside, a trove. Every crayon drawing, every book report, every math test. The sheer volume was overwhelming. Clutching a faded spelling quiz, she felt a hollow ache. It had all been for something, hadn’t it?
