She chewed on her lip, a habit she'd thought she'd broken years ago. The email, with its curt words of cancellation, was burned into her memory. Every detail. Every word. She reread it a dozen times, hoping, praying for a misinterpretation. The silence in the house, normally comforting, now felt oppressive. She grabbed her coat, not knowing where she was going, only that she couldn't stay here, surrounded by the ghosts of what might have been. A sob caught in her throat, a sound she fought to suppress.
