The flickering neon sign outside cast long, distorted shadows across the alleyway. He leaned against the brick wall, trying to control the ragged breaths that escaped his lips. The music from the club pulsed in his ears, a relentless reminder of the vibrant, secret world she had cultivated. He'd discovered the notebooks hidden beneath her bed, filled with elegant, flowing script.

He needed to face her. To know. He pushed open the club door, the sudden blast of sound and warmth hitting him like a physical blow. He saw her, laughing, surrounded by friends. They were speaking, her and her friends. He couldn’t understand the words. He found a place on the edge of the bar.

He saw her coming towards him, her eyes sparkling. She spoke. And he understood.
