Rain lashed against the windows of the cramped apartment, mirroring the turmoil in Amelia’s chest. Another bill arrived, a stark white rectangle that threatened to swallow her whole. She needed a distraction, something to quiet the gnawing anxiety. The used bookstore on the corner beckoned.

She wandered the aisles, fingers tracing the spines of worn novels. The scent of aged paper and forgotten stories offered a small measure of comfort. Finally, a slim volume of poetry caught her eye, a faded blue cover promising solace. She bought it, clutching the book as if it were a lifeline.

Back in her apartment, she settled into her threadbare armchair. As she opened the book, a folded letter tumbled out, its paper yellowed with age. Her heart leaped. This was a mystery, a distraction, a chance to be somewhere else, if only for a few moments.
