"You have to get this place cleaned up," Leo's sister said, a pointed tone in her voice, glancing around the kitchen at the dust and the faded wallpaper. "It's a mess." He glared back at her, feeling his jaw tighten.

He knew she was right, but he couldn't bring himself to do it. The weight of his own troubles was too much. The house was supposed to be a refuge, a sanctuary from his failing business.

He slumped onto the worn couch, its springs poking into his back. He had to fix the plumbing, sell some of the furniture, and find a buyer. He needed a way out, a way to start again. He stared at the ceiling, feeling an oppressive sensation.
