The cold air bit at Eliza's exposed skin as she walked along the darkened street. The streetlights offered a feeble attempt to banish the gloom. She hadn't been able to pay her rent, and her landlord had given her one last day. Her family was expecting her to send money, and she had none.

The wallet sat heavy in her grasp. The notes were like a lifeline. She imagined the relief in her mother’s voice, the smiles on her siblings’ faces. She could provide for them. A tear tracked down her cheek. She was running out of choices.
