The cold wind whipped at Clara’s face as she stared at the ornate music box clutched in her hands. The intricate carvings of dancing figures seemed to taunt her as she stood outside the jeweler's. She thought she would have it forever, but she was wrong.

She had pawned her engagement ring last week. The money had bought her a little more time, but now the bills were again looming over her. The music box was her last resort, the melody it played a constant reminder of simpler, happier days, before everything fell apart.

She closed her eyes, picturing the debt collectors banging on her door, the eviction notice. Her breath hitched. The music box, a gift from her mother, felt heavy and cold against her palm.

Taking a deep breath, she walked in, the bell above the door chiming like a death knell.
