The flickering neon sign of the all-night diner cast elongated shadows across Elias's face. He hunched over a lukewarm coffee, the ceramic mug a rough comfort in his trembling hands. Hours he'd spent, nights lost, building the damn thing, only to find the core principle – the very thing that made it work – already locked down. The patent filing, the cold, official language of rejection… it felt like a punch to the gut.

He ran a hand through his already disheveled hair, leaving it standing on end like static-charged wire. Across the table, the waitress, a woman with eyes that had seen everything, refilled his coffee without a word. He knew he couldn't afford another, but the warmth against his clammy palms was a small mercy. His stomach churned, a knot of unease twisting tighter with each passing minute.

The invention, a self-folding laundry contraption, was his last chance. His savings were depleted, his apartment was on the verge of being repossessed, and his last remaining hope had just evaporated. He pictured his landlord's impatient face and the sheriff's stern voice – he was trapped. He needed a way out.
