He'd spent the entire afternoon building a better, stronger fence. He had spent his savings on posts and materials, and had been working tirelessly. The fence was finally complete. The dog, a terrier mix named Scamp, looked at the barrier as if it did not exist. Moments later, Scamp was on the other side, happily chasing butterflies in his carefully planted tulip bed.

He stared at the dog, then at the fence. It felt like his chest was being squeezed, making it difficult to breathe. This was the third attempt, the third failure. He dropped his tools, the metallic clang echoing in the sudden silence.

The frustration gnawed at him. He knew he was exhausted. He felt sick to his stomach, the sensation rising from his gut. He didn’t know how much longer he could keep this up.
