He sat in the library, the sterile air thick with the scent of old books and unspoken anxieties. The email was a cold stone in his gut. His scholarship, his only chance, was gone.

He felt a searing heat in his chest, a tight, constricting band. He wanted to shout, to smash something, to scream out his frustration. He ran his hand over his face, as if to wipe away the despair.

He looked around the library, at the students engrossed in their studies, oblivious to his anguish. They had no idea. He felt utterly alone, isolated, adrift in a sea of his own fears. He could only close his eyes and pray for a reprieve.
