The notification popped up. A new friend request. From "ShadowWolf92." He'd seen the other account, the one she'd meticulously created to spy on her son, and now, it seemed, he knew. She could feel a flush creeping up her neck. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage.

She deleted the request, her fingers fumbling over the mouse. This wasn’t working. This charade, this invasion of his privacy, was backfiring. She needed a different tactic, a way to breach the wall he’d erected around himself. She felt like she was drowning.

She pushed back from the desk, the chair screeching against the floor. She needed to breathe, to think. She needed a plan. She rubbed her temples, trying to ward off the throbbing headache that was quickly overtaking her. She felt sick.
