The weight in his chest had grown unbearable. He couldn't sleep, he couldn't eat. He’d tried everything to change his mind, including offering to take on all the responsibilities. "Please, Alex, a lizard," he whispered. "It's the perfect companion." Alex just gave him a cold look. The silence was deafening.

He stared out the window, at the world outside, filled with life and vibrancy. He was on the verge of tears. The emptiness was a physical thing, a void that threatened to swallow him whole.

The apartment felt like a cage, and he was trapped inside. He needed something, anything, to fill the void, to remind him that he wasn't completely alone.
