The rejection letter crackled in Amelia’s hand like a dying ember. She'd envisioned this moment, but always with champagne, not the acrid tang of disappointment. Her fingers trembled, tracing the elegant script of the publisher's regrets. It was a form letter, of course. She crumpled it, tossed it toward the overflowing wastebasket, and missed.
