"We regret to inform you..." The words stared back at her from the screen, cold and impersonal. Carol stared at the glowing pixels, her hands trembling so violently she nearly dropped her phone. It was her life's work. Her everything.

She felt a physical ache, a deep hollowness in her stomach. She switched off the computer. The silence in the small room was oppressive. The manuscript, once a source of joy and purpose, now felt like a heavy burden.

She walked to the window, the city lights twinkling in the distance. They seemed to mock her, reminding her of the countless other success stories, the careers built on talent and luck. Tears streamed down her face. She felt utterly lost.
