He paced the cramped backstage area, a caged tiger. The rhythmic thump of the music amplified the pounding in his chest. Every shadow seemed to mock him, whispering accusations of failure. He ran his hands through his already disheveled hair, the texture a familiar source of anxiety. He needed to be good, to be witty, to be anything but this useless husk he felt himself to be.

He glanced at the hastily scribbled notes, the words blurring before his eyes. It was all a jumble, a meaningless collection of clichés. He'd tried everything – heartfelt pronouncements, playful anecdotes, even a joke or two – but none of it felt right. They were all dead on arrival.

The emcee’s voice crackled through the speakers, announcing his name. His legs felt like lead weights, incapable of movement. He knew, with a chilling certainty, that he was about to make a fool of himself. He just couldn't stop.
