Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence of her room. It felt as though the very air had become thick and heavy. She considered blocking him, but the thought of the consequences – the lower grade, the potential for being singled out – froze her. The entire school year was now riding on his assessment of her. She’d been up all night lately, struggling with crippling anxiety, and this felt like a punch to the gut.
