He paced the cramped apartment, his shadow stretching and shrinking on the worn linoleum. The discarded letter, unearthed from a box of childhood mementos, lay open on the kitchen table. He ran a hand through his already dishevelled hair, the action somehow failing to alleviate the internal turmoil. The words, addressed to a former lover, pulsed with a raw need he thought he had buried long ago. "I can't imagine a future without you," the letter confessed. His throat constricted, a knot forming as he remembered her face, the way her laughter used to fill a room. He picked up the phone, hesitating, his finger hovering over the dial button.
