He stared at the email, the words blurring. “Company Acquired.” His future, previously a carefully constructed building, was now a fragile house of cards. Mark’s hands began to tremble, the coffee cup rattling precariously on his desk. He hadn’t saved anything, lived paycheck to paycheck since the divorce.

He felt the metallic taste of panic in his mouth. He ran a hand through his thinning hair, trying to calm the wild thoughts in his head. The lease on his apartment was up in three months. Where would he go? What could he do?

He picked up the phone, dialing his ex-wife’s number. The dial tone echoed the emptiness in his soul. He hung up. He knew what she would say. He had no plan.
