The announcement, simple and stark, hit him like a physical blow. He felt his face flush as he read the words. All the dreams, all the plans, all the sacrifices. Gone. He had just finished paying off his debts.

He ran a hand over his clean-shaven head, a nervous habit he had developed over the years. His blood pressure spiked. He didn’t know what to do, which way to turn. He considered resigning before the new management arrived, but he needed the money.

He grabbed a pen and paper. He needed to write everything down, to organize his thoughts, to have some semblance of control over the chaos.
