The afternoon sun, filtering through the blinds, cast long, dancing shadows across the cramped lab space. Maria’s usually organized workspace was now a battlefield of scattered notes and half-finished experiments. Dr. Chen, the supervisor of the lab and her thesis advisor, was leaving. The news had left her in a daze, unable to focus.

She kept checking her emails, hoping for some miraculous retraction. But there was nothing. Her lab partner had mentioned some other faculty members, but they were unapproachable. She felt trapped. The project she had envisioned, the career she had planned, seemed to be slipping through her fingers.

She picked at the corner of a label on a vial, her breath coming in shallow gasps. She had built her future here, in this lab. Now, the floor was crumbling beneath her feet.
