The smell of stale paint hung heavy in the air. Sarah watched from the doorway as her daughter, Chloe, meticulously applied a third coat to her miniature replica of the Sistine Chapel. Sarah, once a celebrated painter, now struggled to find any work. Commissions had dried up, the gallery owners were indifferent, and the bills were piling up faster than she could erase them. She felt the pressure in her chest, the weight of a looming debt that felt insurmountable.

Chloe hummed a tuneless melody, completely absorbed.

"Chloe, are you sure you have enough money for your art supplies?" Sarah asked, her voice tight.

Chloe didn't answer, her brush strokes becoming even more precise. Sarah’s own brushes sat untouched, gathering dust. The realization that she might have to sell her own paintings, her life’s work, to keep her daughter happy was a bitter pill to swallow.
