The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the kitchen, a scent that usually brought comfort. Not today. Emily stared at her daughter, Maya, who was kneading dough with an almost frantic energy. Emily, a former pastry chef, had lost her restaurant to the recession. Maya's passion for baking, fueled by Emily's old cookbooks and equipment, felt like a cruel joke.
