He hadn't felt hunger, or sleep, or even a sense of the passage of time. The office was a labyrinth, and he was the rat caught in its maze. The interview was a fresh wound, the words of his interviewer like poison. He knew, with a certainty that chilled him to the core, that he had already lost.

His hands shook as he typed out a resignation email. He kept deleting the words, rewording them, trying to find the right tone. He felt the abyss opening up to swallow him whole.

He knew he would never get over it.
