The ringing phone felt like a physical blow to Clara. Each insistent shrill was a demand she was unable to meet. Her apartment lease was nearly up, and she had no money. The weight of it all made her feel heavy, sinking.

“Clara, you look like you haven’t slept in days,” Mark said, his voice laced with concern. He was the only person in the office she liked.

“It’s… a lot,” she mumbled, her throat tight.

“I know what it’s like. Remember Camp Silverlake? The counselors barely slept!” Mark chuckled. “I bet you didn’t get much rest either, did you?”

She blinked, surprised. “Camp Silverlake?” She had tried to forget all about that summer. She recalled the long hikes, the smell of pine, and the feeling that she was constantly failing.

“Yeah! You and I were in the same cabin.” He leaned closer, and the scent of his cologne filled her nostrils. She hated that smell.
