The building felt different now. Cold. Hostile. Amelia clutched the notice in a death grip, the paper crinkling under the pressure. She retreated to her bedroom, shutting the door firmly behind her, but the noise of the hallway echoed in her mind.

She sank to the floor, her back against the door. A wave of nausea washed over her. She buried her face in her hands, trying to shut out the world. The apartment, her refuge from the chaos of life, was turning against her.

She imagined the faces of her neighbors, the whispers, the judgement. Her future, once a boundless horizon, was now a shrinking dot on the landscape. She closed her eyes, the darkness offering a temporary, bleak comfort.
